Columbia County officials report on Helene’s recovery efforts, free food and laundry services

Columbia County, Florida – Columbia County officials gathered at the Emergency Operations Center on Sunday to discuss Hurricane Helene recovery efforts.

Officials told News4JAX after the meeting that starting Monday, the Red Cross will be handing out hot meals at four locations:

  • Deep Creek Community Center

  • Richardson Community Center

  • Fort White Community Center

  • Winfield Community Center

However, a review of the county’s Facebook page also showed another location.

People at the Winfield Community Center expressed joy at the Red Cross’s food distribution.

Residents who also visit the Winfield Community Center can shower, do laundry and use the restroom.

This is one of the few locations in the city that offer this type of service after a hurricane.

Clarence Jett and others without power used the free laundromat in Winfield.

He said that he didn’t have clean work clothes before going to the laundromat, but that thanks to this he would be able to go to work tomorrow.

Maenell Bailey said it felt great to be able to take a hot shower when the power was out.

“I should make sure I get a good night’s sleep,” Bailey said.

Additionally, during Sunday’s meeting at the EOC, power companies provided updates on power outages in the area.

Clay Electric expressed hope that 98% of their customers will have electricity by Tuesday.

This does not include the Three Rivers area. They believe 98% of residents in the area should have power restored by Wednesday evening or Thursday morning.

FPL hopes to restore power to 95% of its customers in the area by the end of the day on Monday.

Suwannee Valley Electric says 50% of customers have power. There is no exact date for when all power should be restored to customers, but it was estimated to be a similar timeline to Clay Electric.

Duke Energy said 95% of their customers will be restored by midnight tonight.

The state’s rapid assessment team was on site on Sunday, and a local team will be on site on Monday.

The director of the emergency operations center said it was an important step in the recovery effort.

“We are hoping that we can get a PA declaration as well as an IA declaration and then work our way up to being included in the FEMA declaration so that residents can inquire about reimbursement for Hurricane Helene,” Shayne Morgan said.

Morgan said it’s important to report all damage in the area. This can be done by calling the hotline at 386-719-7530.
