Cultural transformation for ex-miners welfare hall at Goldthorpe

Work on the site, which began last year, with a second phase launched in February, also included the transformation of basement storage spaces into rehearsal rooms and a studio.

Meanwhile, more car parks have been created and changing rooms and backstage areas have been renovated, Barnsley Council said.

As part of the same project, footpaths at neighboring Welfare Park are being resurfaced and a new public artwork installed, with CCTV provided by South Yorkshire Police.

The Playhouse work was part of the £23.1 million Goldthorpe Town Deal, a package of projects for the Dearne Valley funded by the UK government, the council said.

Playhouse director Julie Medlam said she was “excited” about the future possibilities offered by recent work for the site.

“The new facilities will greatly benefit local artists, musicians and theater groups, making the Playhouse even more vibrant and inclusive,” she said.

“I can’t wait to welcome everyone back to see it for themselves.” We look forward to raising the curtain on a new era for our beloved theater.”
