Paris Jackson understands exactly why her dad wanted to hook her up with his dear friend, Oscar-winning film legend Elizabeth Taylor.

Paris, 26, stars in a new three-part BBC documentary series Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel superstar. In the first episode, she explains why she thinks her dad chose Taylor to be her godmother.

“I think it’s because I grew up in the spotlight. “I’m sure there was a part of him that knew we were going to have a very similar experience,” he says.

“I was homeschooled, so I don’t know what it’s like to be around other kids my age. I was with adults all the time. And I think it was the same for her.”

Earlier in the episode, Paris comments on the strange experience of growing up the daughter of one of the most famous men in the world. Michael died at the age of 50 in 2009; his middle child and only daughter was 11 years old at the time. (Her brothers are Prince Michael Jackson, 27, and Bigi Jackson, 22.)

“I can’t speak for everyone who grows up in the spotlight,” he says, “but there’s not one normal thing about it.”

Paris was just a week and a half shy of her 13th birthday when Taylor died in 2011 at the age of 79, but she devoted herself to learning about the star’s true passion – her mission to fight ignorance and fear around HIV and AIDS – and her lasting legacy as founder of the Elizabeth Foundation Taylor AIDS.

While talking to PEOPLE about her role as an ETAF ambassador in 2021, Paris shared some of her memories of her godmother.

“Of course, I was a little girl at the time, so I can’t share any conversations or specific memories I had with my godmother. However, in my mind’s eye, I remember my dad talking to Elizabeth several times at our home in Encino,” she shared.

Paris remembered Taylor standing out as one of the women he frequented, recalling, “She was very pretty and wore sparkling necklaces and rings.”

“Elizabeth was an exception. I didn’t know who she was or what she had done, and I didn’t find out until years later,” she continued. “I remember then how I always wanted to bring her small gifts when we visited her, like stuffed toys or bracelets that I found. Most of the time I just sat on her bedroom floor with her cat, Fang, while she and my father caught up.”

Elizabeth Taylor: Rebel superstar also includes interviews with Joan Collins, Sharon Stone and Kim Kardashian, who executive produced the docuseries. Episodes 2 and 3 will air on the BBC on October 4 and 11 respectively.
